Birthmarks are harmless skin irregularities that appear at birth, or shortly after, anywhere on the body. There are two types of birthmarks: vascular (caused by an overgrowth of blood vessels) and pigmented (caused by excess skin pigment). Vascular birthmarks may resolve themselves, but they typically become darker and thicker over time.
